Actor and director Robert Redford’s Tiburon residence at 2517 Mar East St., is on the market for $4.15 million.
Actor and director Robert Redford has put his Tiburon residence on the market for $4.15 million, offering a rare opportunity to glimpse into his private coastal haven.
Known for his roles in films like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Horse Whisperer,” Redford purchased the four-bedroom property in 2020 for $3.1 million, according to public records.
The split-level cottage at 2517 Mar East St., built in 1968, sits on a 0.2-acre lot and spans approximately 2,824 square feet. Surrounded by towering redwoods, the home overlooks San Francisco Bay, with sweeping views extending to Keil Cove and Angel Island.
Highlights include a spacious family room, two-car garage, a front garden and patio, and expansive decks facing south and east.
While not included in the listing price, some of the furniture and artwork — many pieces created by the sellers themselves — can be negotiated separately.
In a statement to the Chronicle, Redford, 88, and his wife, artist Sibylle Szaggars Redford, expressed their deep connection to the home and the town of Tiburon.
“We have a long history with and great affection for the town of Tiburon, having previously owned other homes in the area,” they said. “We have always loved the fact that one can walk to most places, not only stores and restaurants, but also hiking trails in the nearby open space.”
The couple described Tiburon as a sanctuary, adding that one of their favorite spots is the town’s promenade, which offers views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco.
“It has a friendly vibe, and we enjoy walking the path and exchanging greetings with other walkers, both people and dogs,” they said.
Since acquiring the property, the Redfords have made a series of updates.
“Overall, we made cosmetic changes to the interior to brighten things up and create more of a coastal feel inside,” they said. “And we love spending time outside, so we improved the outdoor terraces and gardens, creating more of an inviting flow between the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces. We love Mediterranean gardens and Tiburon’s climate is perfect for plants like lavender, jasmine and succulents, all water wise plants which now grace the outdoor spaces around the home.”
While the couple have enjoyed their time in Tiburon, they primarily reside in Santa Fe, N.M., where Sibylle runs an art gallery. They maintain other homes in California and Utah, where Redford founded the Sundance Institute and Sundance Resort.
“The two of us are devoting a great deal of time to the non-profit organization, The Way of the Rain, also headquartered in Santa Fe, which produces educational and artistic performances to protect the environment and promote global conservation efforts,” they said.
Once a small ferry town known for dairy farming, Tiburon has evolved into one of the Bay Area’s wealthiest residential enclaves, attracting a mix of entrepreneurs, celebrities and those seeking respite from the noise of San Francisco.
While Tiburon’s real estate market has softened in recent months due to rising interest rates, according to Mavromihalis, it remains highly desirable.
In October, the median sale price in Tiburon reached $2.7 million, a 6.4% increase from the same period the previous year, according to Redfin.
